HERE'S WHERE OCEAN ACIDIFICATION WILL HIT THE U.S. HARDEST

U.S. coastal communities better start preparing for ocean acidification now, especially if they want scallops, oysters and other shellfish to keep appearing on our dinnerplates. That's the message of a new study that shows that shellfisheries across the U.S. are more vulnerable to climate change's less considered counterpart than previously thought. That vulnerability is due to more than changing ocean chemistry. Social and economic factors, local and more distant pollution and natural ocean processes could conspire to make ocean acidification a problem sooner rather than later.

VANDANA SHIVA: 'ALL LIFE DEPENDS ON SOIL'

"2015 is the year of soil. Bringing the soil to the center of our consciousness and our planning is vital for the life of the soil, but also for the future of our society. History provides ample evidence that civilizations which ignored the health and well-being of the soil, and exploited it without renewing its fertility, disappeared along with the soil", said Dr. Vandana Shiva. Uncontrolled urbanization, mega mines, superhighways and gigantic infrastructure projects are the burial grounds of fertile soil. We can avert the collapse of our civilization if, in this year of soil, we collectively and democratically commit ourselves to protecting and rejuvenating the soil and, thus, our future.

THE ANTI-WOMEN LAWS STILL IN PLACE AROUND THE WORLD

The women's rights group Equality Now has launched a new drive against 44 governments who have laws that discriminate against women, which they accompanied with a global petition and the hastag #UnSexyLaws. They listed the top 10 most discriminatory laws against women from around the world, which included women being banned from working at night in Madagascar, females in Russia prevented from taking employment as a plumber and the fact that marital rape is legal in the Bahamas. According to the leading campaign group, the brutal truth is that globally, the list of anti-women laws still in existence is truly shocking. Read more here.

ADVANCING YOUTH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS WITH YOUNG WOMEN AND YOUNG MEN

As the UN Secretary General recently said, the world is experiencing an un-precedented demographic phenomenon. There are more people under the age of 25 today than ever, totaling nearly 3 billion of which 1.3 billion of that total are between the age of 12 and 24. These youth live, by and large, in cities and towns; the cities of the developing world account for over 90% of the world's urban growth and youth account for a large percentage of those inhabitants. UN-Habitat believes that youth are not only leaders of tomorrow, but leaders of today. This report seeks to outline how youth are taking these leadership roles, and to explore how we can support youth to become active and responsible citizens now and in the future. (Authors: Felipe Cala, Ravi Karkara).

CURBING CHILD LABOUR IN KOSOVO: LET CHILDREN BE CHILDREN

Poverty pushes a high number of children in Kosovo to drop out of school and enter child labour as early as 10 years old. The ILO supports efforts of Kosovo's public institutions and social partners to eliminate child labour, with an emphasis on its worst forms. The Chamber of Commerce, with ILO support, prepared reports on the situation of child labour in companies and in their supply chains in agriculture, construction, extractive industries and collection of scrap metal. The reports were used to mobilize members of the KCC to take effective measures to prevent child labour.
